TEMAZCAL, BAÑO DE VAPOR PREHISPÁNICO

El Temazcalli es de acuerdo con el Diccionario de la Lengua Náhuatl o Mexica un cuarto, establecimiento, casa de baños, sudadero. Esta palabra, temazcalli pasó al Español como Temazcal  y es una clase singular de baño de vapor de origen prehispánico en uso todavía en diferentes regiones de México, pero principalmente en zonas frías, aunque se practica en muchas partes del país y aún en la ciudad de México.

Vale la pena aclarar que la palabra Temazcalli, como se dijo antes, significa la casa o cuarto de baños y, la palabra Temazcal es propiamente el horno del Temazcalli.

Se trata de una construcción generalmente hecha de adobe previamente calentada que se utiliza con fines curativos y también religiosos, higiénicos y hasta preventivos, donde se hace entrar al paciente o enfermo junto con el terapeuta para impregnarse del ambiente húmedo y recibir los vapores, dándole al enfermo según lo indiquen las circunstancias, infusiones de plantas medicinales antes de ingresar al Temazcalli. 

Era de gran importancia el Temazcalli, al grado que antiguamente en su interior tenía lugar el parto y allí mismo se enterraba la placenta y hoy día aún se le considera un recinto para la purificación del nacimiento o renacimiento. Existía un enorme simbolismo y conexión con la diosa madre, es decir, la tierra y por ello el ombligo de los recién nacidos también se enterraba en el Temazcalli. 

El Temazcalli representa a la tierra y el dios del fuego habita en el horno del Temazcal, llamado Xicle, que deriva del náhuatl Xitl que, a su vez significa obligo, es decir, el ombligo de la tierra, el quinto punto cardinal. Por ello, cuando el enfermo y el curandero entran al Temazcalli, de hecho están entrando al seno de la madre tierra y salen curados y purificados por el fuego y el agua como si acabasen de nacer, es decir, se verifica un renacimiento, pues el vapor es un purificador obtenido por la unión del fuego y el agua, que en náhuatl se escriben Taqsjoyut y Natsi itni, respectivamente.

Los terapeutas o curanderos indígenas afirman que el calor que envuelve al cuerpo del enfermo es primordial, pues sudando se elimina la enfermedad, utilizándose para tratar, por ejemplo,  el reumatismo, el dolor de las articulaciones, dolor de espalda y pecho causados por enfriamientos e inclusive, elimina el veneno por intoxicaciones o picaduras de animales ponzoñosos, entre otros muchos usos.

El Temazcal es considerado un potente agente terapéutico, pues al intensificarse la sudoración, se descongestionan las vías respiratorias, se obtiene la relajación muscular, se estimula la eficiente circulación de la sangre y es llevado a cabo con la temperatura adecuada para evitar una descompresión sanguínea. Se incorporan al baño una enorme variedad de aceites esenciales de las plantas medicinales que fluyen en el vapor, lo que produce efectos farmacológicos patentes y beneficiosos para el paciente.

TEMAZCAL, THE PREHISPANIC STEAM BATH.

 The Temazcal  according to the dictionary of the Nahuatl language or Mexica is a room, establishment, bathhouse, sweating room. 

This word, temazcalli was translated to Spanish as Temazcal and is a singular kind of steam bath from prehispanic origin still in use in different regions of Mexico, but mainly in cold areas, although it is practiced in many parts of the country and even in Mexico, City.

It is worth noting that the word Temazcalli, as stated before, means house or bathrooms and Temazcal word is properly the Temazcalli oven. 

It's a construction previously preheated, usually made with adobe and purposes healing, religious, hygienic and preventive, where the patient or sick get together with the therapist to soak up the atmosphere and get wet vapors , giving the sick as indicated by the circumstances, infusions before entering the Temazcal .

In pre-hispanic times, the temazcal was of a great importance because inside the Temazcalli  have had place, the childbirths and the placenta right there was buried and today  is still considered an enclosure for the purification of birth or rebirth. There was a huge symbolism and connection to the mother goddess, ie, the land and therefore the umbilicus of newborns also is buried in Temazcalli.

 The Temazcalli represents the earth and the fire god dwells in the Temazcal  oven, called Xicle , derived from the Nahuatl  Xitl, which  means the navel of the earth, the fifth cardinal point . Therefore, when the patient and the healer enter the Temazcal, in fact they are entering the womb of mother earth and once they go outside are healed and purified by fire and water as if they had just been born, that is, a rebirth is verified, then the steam is a purifier obtained by the union of fire and water, which in Nahuatl are written as Natsi Taqsjoyut and Itni, that is, the gods of Fire and water respectively.

Therapists or indigenous healers claim that heat that surrounds the body of the patient is paramount, because sweating removes the disease, used to treat, for example, rheumatism, joint pain, back pain and chest, caused by cooling and inclusive, removes poison or venom bites of poisonous animals, among many other uses.

The Temazcal is considered a powerful therapeutic agent, it intensifies the sweating, the airways are cleared, muscle relaxation is obtained, it stimulates the efficient circulation of blood and is carried out with proper temperature to prevent a blood decompression. A huge variety of essential oils of medicinal plants in flowing steam bath are incorporated, resulting patents and beneficial pharmacological effects for the patient.[1]
